A TARANAKI PROTEST.

Thk agitation set afoot by the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce urging the Minister for Railways to alter the time-table between Napier-Wairarapa and New Plymouth is thus referred to by the Elthain Argus : —“The Palmerston North people wish to alter the time-table of the mail train, the result of which will be that passengers from Wellington to Patea, Hawera, Eltham, .Stratford and New Plymouth will reach their destination much later than they do at present. The only gain will lie that there will be a through service between Napier and New Plymouth, and the through passengers between these points are very few indeed. The New Plymouth Chamber of Commerce appears to be ready to fall in with the proposal. We can see nothing to recommend it. The Palmerston people wish to delay the starting of the Wellington train threequarters of an hour, and for the sake of two or three passengers who ma}' occasionally wish to make the through journey from Napier to New Plymouth hundreds of passengers between Wellington and New Plymouth are to be delayed. The New Plymouth Chamber of Commerce is a very complaisant body if it agrees to the proposed delay, and we are sure it does not represent the views of the New Plymouth people on this question.”
