THE MISSING WARATAH.

London, Sept. 4. A meeting of London underwriters discussed the proposal for co-operation with the Commonwealth Government in a search for the Waratah outside familiar tracks. Though the scheme is likely to be warmly supported, the feeling among underwriters is extremely pessimistic. It is, however, still possible to , reinsure the Waratah at 90 guineas per cent. Numerous offers have been received from Australia during the past few days to write the risk at that rate. [A Melbourne cablegram in Saturday’s issue stated : “Negotiations are almost completed for the dispatch of a special. steamer to search for the Waratah. The cost is estimated at about for a three months’ cruise. The expense is to be borne in equal shares by the Federal Government, the owners of the Waratah, the underwriters, and public subscriptions.”] Sydney, Sept. 4. The statements made by a passenger who left the Waratah at Durban—-because he was not pleased with her sea qualities and considered she took a long time to recover herself—are not borne out by another passenger who arrived by the Waratah at Durban. The latter scouted the idea that the steamer had too much top hamper. He declared the Waratah behaved splendidly in bad weather.
