Mku?ouknk, September 2. The Minister for Defence (Mr Joseph Cook) has approved regulations for the prize of ,£SOOO for the best flying machine suitable for military purposes. The regulations provide: The inventor must have been resident in Australia for at least two years, and be an Australianborn or a naturalised British subject. The machine must not be supported by any gas lighter than air. As far as possible the machine must be constructed in Australia by Australians. It must be capable of poising, returning to its starting-place, and travelling at a rate not less than twenty miles an hour. In a test the machine must carry at least two passengers, and the total loading above the complete weight of the machine must be not less than three hundred and fifty pounds. The invention must possess sufficient novelty to warrant the granting of letters patent. The successful machine, If satisfactory for military purposes, is to be placed at the disposal of the Commonwealth Government for a period of three months, at a price to be fixed by arbitration.
