The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, September 2,1909. WAKING UP.
At last John Bull has decided to drop his easy-going attitude towards foreigners, and make it less easy for them to spy out the land. Last month the War Office, Dondon, issued instructions in which it was stated that officers before inviting foreign officers (including military attaches) to stay with them in military quarters, must apply through the usual channel to the War Office for permission, reporting the name of their intended guest. All such applications are to be sent to enable them to reach the War Office at least one week before the date of the proposed visit. The visitors will not be allowed to see anything of military interest or to be shown official books without permission. The cry, “Wake-up, England !” has reached even John Bull’s dull ears.
