PENGUIN DISASTER.
PRESENTATION TO MR Mc-
MENAMIN. Wellington, August 30. A deputation representing the surviving passengers and crew of the Penguin waited on Mr W. McMenamin at Island Bay and presented him with an address and a silver-mounted pipe in recognition of his kindness on the night of the wreck. It may be remembered that it was at his station near Terawhiti that the survivors were welcomed and cared for. COMPENSATION CLAIMS.
The Arbitration Court had before it to-day a number of claims for compensation arising out of the wreck of the Penguin in February. The claims generally were admitted, the only question being the amount of compensation. In the case of Albert Geo. Lusemore, third officer, the Union Company agreed to pay £SOO to the Public Trustee for the benefit of the widow.
In the case of a claim by the parents and brother of Walter Rentoul, engineer, Mr Justice Sim said that when the court was properly constituted by the appointment of a successor to the late Mr S. Brown, employers’ representative, it would probably make an order on the basis of £135 an( l costs.
Au order was made by consent for the payment of £207 to the mother of Francis Driscoll, second officer.
The court stated that in the case of the claim by the mother of the late Mrs Hope, stewardess, it was prepared to make an order for £7 2 compensation if necessary. His Honour was informed that several claims had been settled out of court, and the hearing of other claims against the Union Company was adjourned till Thursday.
