ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
Christchurch. August 30,
A girl, aged about 20 years, attempted suicide last night at the Manchester Street Bridge over the Avon, She was noticed bv a young man, who saw her climb on to the railing of the bridge and fling herself into the water. He followed her into the river, and pulled her to the shore. This morning she appeared at the Magistrate’s Court to answer a charge of attempted suicide. Sub-Inspector M'Grath said that, as far as he could discover, the girl had had a severe illness some years ago, and since then had been subject to fits of melancholia. She was living with her parents. Mr W. R. Haseldeu, S.M., said that he would not address the girl in public, but would leave the matter to her family. She was convicted and discharged.
