RANGITIKEI BY-ELHCTION. Mangaweka, x\ugust 23. The election for the Rangitikei seat promises to be one of the keenest yet held in the Dominion. Of the ten candidates originally announced six are still in the running. Messrs Hutchinson and Hockley (-Opposition), Hornblow and Meldrum (Government), Smith (Independent Opposition), and Joblin (Opposition). . A report that Mr Meldrum has been selected by the Government is contradicted by the ActingPremier, who states that the Government will make no selection, as either of the Liberal candidates is equally acceptable. This gives Mr Hornblow the most favourable chance, he having already addressed two meetings and been well received.
Messrs Hutchinson and Hockley absolutely refuse to retire in each other’s favour, and will go to the poll.
