“STRENUOUS FOOTBALL.”

SPECTATORS TAKE A HAND

Adelaide, August 8

A disgraceful scene was witnessed on the Lindsay Circus Oval, Hindmarsb, yesterday afternoon, when the premiership of the Royal Football Association was being contested between Torrensides ami West Adelaide Ramblers. The umpire cautioned some of the latter, but the warning was unheeded, and the climax was reached soon after the game was resumed at half-time, when a Torrenside player was struck. The spectators then took a hand in the game, and there was for a

time a general melee, A wellknown and inoffensive footballer jumped the fence to act the part of peacemaker, but before he reached the scene of hostil: ties he was struck behind the ear by someone, and fell unconscious. The ground was then rushed, the game stopped, and blows freely exchanged. A Rambler player had his nose broken. A well-dressed woman forced her way through the excited throng, and struck out quite “manfully” with her gingham. The police then stepped in and matters became normal, A slight disturbance afterwards took place in the pavilion, when it was alleged the lady with the gingham threw stones at a former antagonist.
