THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
We received a letter from Mr P. J. Hennessy from London, under date July 6th, and at the time of writing he does not speak too hopefully of the hemp market in the world’s metropolis. We quote him as follows : —“Just a line in reference to hemp. I regret to state that I have to confirm my letter from New York. From what I can see here with <he present output of low grade Manila there is no prospect of a recovery in the market at present. Now, as to the future, the position I am in prevents me from writing as straight as I might. (I am a miller.) Igo this far, and say that if we are to keep our fibre on the market, the cost of production must come down. As the season will be just on opening when this arrives, I hope holders of leaf, Union and millers, will have come to an understanding to keep things going.” Since Mr Hennessy’s letter was written, however, there been a rise in the market. We agree with Mr Hennessy in the hope that the industrial side of the industry will be fixed up on an equitable basis in order that our hemp may not suffer on the Home market.
