AN INDISCREET J.P.

At the Otaki Court on Monday before Messrs Herbert Freeman and Byron Brown, application was lodged by Alice Barrow for a prohibition order against Charles Barrow (says the Mail). Owing to non-appearance of the informant, the case was dismissed. Mr Staveley, who appeared for defendant, asked the Bench’s permission to put Mr Barrow in the box, pointing out that he had been placed in an unfair position, and besides a reflection had been cast on his character. It was not right, Mr Staveley said, to put his client to the expense of securing a solicitor and witnesses, and then for the applicant to quietly withdraw. The whole thing was a farce. Mr Brown ; Don’t talk rot ! Mr Staveley; lam not in the habit of talking rot to the Bench. Mr Brown : That’s not the word I should have used, but I won't withdraw it. Mr Staveley : Then I’ll withdraw from the case; I won’t appear before you- With this Mr Staveley gathered up his papers and withdrew.
