BANQUET.
The banpuet held in the Council Chamber on Saturday afternoon in connection with the official opening of the Post Office, was fairly well attended, despite the unfavourable weather and a busy day for local tradesmen. The catering was in the hands of Messrs Langley Bros., who are to be congratulated on the excellent menu provided. The Mayor officiated as Chairman of the Reception Committee and the Town Clerk as Secretary, and they carried out their duties in a praiseworthy manner. Apologies for absence were received from the Hon. Dr. Findlay, Hon. J. A. Millar, Mr Field. M.P., J. A. Nash, Esq. (Mayor of Palmerston), and B. R. Gardner Esq. (Mayor of Levin). The Mayor presided, and on his right was seated Mr Newman, M.P., and near at hand was Mr John Stevens, ex-M.P. for the district, and Mr J. G. Wilson (chairman of the Manawatu County Council). Members of the Borough Council and Chamber of Commerce, and prominent citizens were well represented. Alter Mr W. S. Stewart had said grace, ample justice was done to the good things provided. The toast list was as follows: “The King’’ (Mayor), “The MinisUqq” proposed in a very able manner by the Mayor; “Parliament,’’ proposed by Mr John Stevens, and responded to by Mr Newman, M.P.; “Local Bodies,” proposed by Mr Horublow and responded to by Messrs J. G. Wilson. F. Purnell, R. B. McKenzie, Dr Mandl, and Cr Alex. Speirs ; “The Mayor, ” proposed by Mr Newman and responded to by The Chairman; “Local Post Office Staff,” Mr AIL Fraser, and responded to by Mr A. D. Clemett (postmaster) and Mr Cowles; “The Press,” proposed by Dr Adams and responded to by Mr Hornblow.
