The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, July 27, 1909. HARBOUR BOARD MATTERS.
It has been suggested to us, and we publish it for what it is worth, that the flagstaff should be removed from its present position to a point nearer the mouth of the river. It is contended by our informant that if this were done the pilot could render greater assistance to masters in piloting vessels over the bar and into the river channel. The expense of removing the flagstaff and look-out would not amount to over ,£SO. If the suggestion would further safeguard shipping, then it would be in the best interests of the Board to carry it out. We should like to hear the suggestion discussed at the next Board meeting.
:\t # 'l' The upset rental of sections at our local seaside resort and assessment of improvements on a number of them, was definitely settled by the Harbour Board at last night’s meeting. In our opinion the Board has dealt very equitably with present house owners and persons requiring sections for building purposes in the luture will have security of tenure. Now that this matter is definitely settled the Board can centre its attention on settling the foreshore leases adjacent to the wharf.
