PALMERSTON’S LOAN PROPOSALS.
A poll was taken yesterday, on a proposal to raise the dam at Tiritea water-works thirty feet, making a dam of fifty feet in all, and thereby impounding eighteen million gallons of water ; ,£16,000 was asked for this and minor pipe works. Also ,£2OOO, in addition to already agreed to, was asked for enlarging the present library buildings. Strong opposition was aroused to this latter over the question of site, and it was thrown out by 419 votes to 171. The opposition to the library vote also _ affected the water supply question and that loan was thrown out by 377 votes to 221.
