RAID ON CHINESE.
AT PALMERSTON.
«At Palmerston North, yesterday, the police raided the Le Ping. When a Celestial sighted the police, he shouted “Hi Yah!” to his companions, and there was general consternation, Le Ping, jun.; started to shave himself with a razor, but as he had no soap, the police saw through his little ruse, and took: the razor- In the smoking room five Chinamen were found with opium lamps alight and the odour of the drug was strong. Le Ping, senr., was conscious enough to to make a determined resistence when the rolls upon rolls of bank notes, which were tied round his body were being handled. A.tin of opium was found under a mattress. In the kitchen two more ■pipes and other “ illegal ” articles, including a very large bottle of tincture of opium, were also discovered. This tincture is boiled over a fire * till it is reduced into smokeable opium. The police ranged the nine Celestials in a row, and they were acquainted with the intentions of the police, but they all shrieked their innocence.
