FOXTON OUTCLASSED
MANAWATUSI v. FOXTON 3. The* rep, fixture at Palmerston, on Saturday resulted in a runaway! victory for Manawatu ;by the above margin. The ground was greasy and a slight breeze was blowing. The home team had the advantage in weight and pace and thoroughly outplayed their opponents. . Foxton won the toss but elected to play against the wind. Manawatu assumed the offensive immediately and Carroll followed up after a loose rush, but kicked over the line. Foxton bounced the ball and Boon fell on it, scoring four minutes after the start. Ward failed. A passing rush by 1 the backs ended in a scrum, but the ball went into touch-in-goal. Rore stopped an ensuing rush and Ford caught up the leather and potted a very fine goal. Foxton then made their first attacking movement, but Buchanan relieved. The blacks again warmed tip and Smith was prominent in several rushes. A good kick by Rore was followed up by Bird, who knocked on. A passing bout was started, and Dunn got possession, but his kick was charged down, and Ryan following up fast scored. McMinn failed with the kick. The local forwards’ grafted splendidly and overran their opponents, getting near the blacks’ line, where O’,Connor marked. McMinn did not succeed. The Manawatu vanguard continued to attack and Ward scored and McMinn converted. The Foxton backs then made their first attack from a scrum, but a mark by Reid stopped them for a time, but they again assumed the .offensive for a little while, only to be sent back by a rush by McMinn. Nepia relieved well, but a good dash by Ongley enabled Boon to score. McMinn’s kick was a poster. After resuming Nepia got in a good kick but Ongley caught the leather and after a dazzling Am scored between the posts. Buchanan’s kick went over. The Foxton forwards got a very sudden dribbling rush on the move, but a dash by McMinn and Best again put the greens on the attack. Ongley secured from a scrum, and shot the oval out to Ford, whose pass to Carroll was a failure, but doubling round he picked up and passed quickly to Martis, who scored brilliantly. The kick failed. The spell then ended with the score 23 to nil in favour of Manawatu.
Foxton opened the spell with an attack but soon play was continually hovering near the black line, owing to the open back play of the Manawatu backs. Martis made a good dash and nearly got over, and from the scramble Brough scored, Buchanan failing. Scores now came thick and fast and Carroll broke through the defence, and transferred to Brough, who again scored. Reid failed to convert. Rore kicked high, and Bird streaked at his top after the kick and scored near the touch-line. Haeana failed with a good kick. Foxton then made another spasmodic attack, but Reid saved, and Ryan followed up hard but went into touch-in-goal. From a scrum Ongley feinted, cut in, and then kicked high. A clump of forwards charged after it and Boon scored and converted his. own try. Ongley then started an attack, passed to Carroll, to Buchanan, who gave a forward pass back to Carroll. O’Connor got the ball for about the first time in the game and after making a good run gave it to McMinn, who tumbled a couple of opponents over and scored. Wighton converted. From a line-out the home forwards passed quickly among themselves and Boon scored, Brough’s kick going over. Foxton made a little rally but Ongley passed to Buchanan, to McMinif, who cut in and scored. Ward’s attempt failed. Again the-forwards passed among themselves well and Boon scored near the corner. Martis kicked and missed. The game ended shortly after with Manawatu in the lead by 51 to 3.
