The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, July 17, 1909. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

At the recent Anglican Synod, when speaking to a motion in regard to Bible-reading in schools, the Rev. C. C. Harper, of Palmerston, had a tilt at Sir Robert Sout, Chief Justice. He said that“he was sure that every member of the Synod and the vast majority of people in the Dominion were exceedingly sorry that one who held the exalted position of Chief Justice, and would consequently be listened to at Home, should make statements that could not be characterised as anything else than quite extraordinary, absolutely unprovable as regards the facts, and entirely reprehensible in every way. They in New Zealand- had long ago learned not to take Sir Robert . Stout very seriously on any matter, and in this case he had said what was absolutely contrary to what they knew to be true.” Th® last paragraph is a somewhat sweeping assertion. “They in New Zealand" hold a much higher opinion of our esteemed Chief Justice than the vicar of Palmerston has any conception of.

Some time ago an effort was made to form a bowling club in Foxton. A site for the green was practically decided upon, and almost the whole number, of guarantors required to finance the purchase of the ground, etc., obtained. For some unaccountable reason the movement was dropped and nothing more has been heard of it. The question has again cropped up, through the generous offer of Mr Climie, civil engineer, who, we are reliably informed, is prepared to take the levels, draw up specifications, and prepare an estimate of the cost of laying down the green. Mr Climie has been entrusted with the laying down of several greens, and is an enthusiastic bowler. Surely this will stimulate the promoters into activity. Further, the section previously under offer by Mr Gibbs to the promoters is still available. We suggest that a meeting of all interested be convened as soon as Mr Climie’s report, etc,, is available. The question of finance is , the bogey, but if other townships of less importance than our own have been able to form a club and run it successfully, why not Foxton. It only requires a shaking tip of the dry bones. Once a club is formed we have no fear as to its future.
