A FOXTON RESIDENT ABROAD.
By Monday's mail, we received a letter and budget of papers, from Mr P. J. Hennessy, from Chicago. • 1 As our readers, are aware,' Mr ~ Hennessy,- accompanied by his eldest daughter* is making s tour ‘ « of the world. In a previous issue - we published an .account of Mr Hennessy’s travels and impres-, sions.' Mr Henaessy’s letter is dated M ; ay 24th, from Chicago. He states‘inter alia: I am- sorry I<" cannot forward you any uotbs by this mail. Had- no idea 'of ,ihe immensity of the iob I had taken' •' on. —It is one, thing to run a Harbour Board and another to act as correspondent to'-a jiewspaper. ■ Chicago is right up to reputation ’ one reads of, and it is impossible- 1 ’ to iorm any conception of its-im-mensity without, seeing it. lam having a very enjoyable time amongst my relations. .. . M Referring to ..matters concerning' Foxlon, Mr Hennessy says that .irom a , cppy of the Herald, he noticed that - a -meeting, of the - Harbour Board,had lapsed. He hopes that the /outside members of the Board are not losing heart, on ‘ account of lack of revenue and a knowledge concerning the history of the local port.. He urges members to clamour for the natural heritage of the port, i.e.,, the wharfages- ■ In Mr Hennessy's opinion, - the .Board’s present, restricted finance is the best, lever-it . cpUld possibly have against the ' Government, and to show the injustice of depriving the, Board of its rightful revenue. - He says: I' am as sanguine as ever that we are . fighting a winning battle. Referring to the faenlp industry, Mr Hennessy says the market does not, look bright in, Chicago. New ’ Zealand millers ‘an 4 employees 1 - should be urged to $0/ adjust matters in order I 'to keep the industry , alive. So far ■! have not discovered that any of our hemp is hieing used here at present.'. Sisal is our principal competitor.. lam forwarding you copies of the Cordige Trade Journal, which will more fully explain the present position, - v of fibres in America. - lam tally satisfied that our hemp is not looked after as it ought, to be, - and about which I will fully explain on my return. In conclusion, Mr Hennessy desires to be kindly remembered t 6 all readers of the Herald.
