THE RECENT TRAGEDY.

FUNERAL OF THE LATE THOS. NYE. The funeral of the late Mr Thomas Nye, the victim of the recent tragedy, took place yesterday Despite the very inclement weather, the remains were followed to their resting place by a large number of people representative of the town and district. After the mournful procession left “Suunyside,” it increased in length. The pall bearers included Messrs B. G. Gower, O. Robinson, A. and W. Symons (old school mates and fellow settlers. of deceased),. Lionel Burston, deceased’s step-son, was also in attendance. Included among the mourners at the graveside were a number of females. The impressive funeral service was conducted by the Rev G. K. Aitken (Presbyterian), who briefly referred to the uncertainty of life and the necessity for readiness to enter the “narrow portal” when the grim messenger should come. /\fter those assembled had taken a last look at the casket which held deceased’s mortal remains, the gathering dispersed. As the crowd moved away one could hear the whole gruesome details again talked over and speculations as to* the cause of the murder, the saneness or otherwise of the perpetrator of the deed, and what might have been.

We are informed that about a week ago the late Mr Nye dreamed that he had been shot by a man. He subsequently mentioned the dream in a jocular way. In this case the exception proved the rule. That dream, unfortunately, did not go by the contrary.

Hedley Nye, who stands charged with the murder of his father, will appear before Mr A. D; Thomson S.M., at the local court on Monday next, at 10.30 a.m. He will be defended by Mr T. M. Wilford and Mr P. J. O’Regan,; of Wellington. Sub-Inspector O’Donovan will represent the police and Mr Loughnan, of Palmerston N., will appear as Crown Prosecutor.

When Constable Woods and'Dr. Adams arrived at “Sunnyside,” at about 2 o’clock on the morning of the crime, Hedley saw them and it is alleged he subsequently stated it was then that he decided to make off.

It was a great relief to the col-: lective female mind when assured; that the iad who is charged with the murder had been arrested, although there are still numerous cases of ‘ ‘nerves’ ’ in many households.

The recent horrible crime is the first in the annals of t Foxton, and although we cannot read the future, we sincerely hope that it will be the last.

We are pleased; to be able tostale that Mrs Nye ds bearing up wonderfully well under the circumstances. She has taken up her residence with Mrs Collins senr.

The late Mr Nye,having, died entestate, the Public Trustee .will administer the estate and the agent arrived for that purpose today. ■ .

We are informed that Hedley’s mother, on hearing, the news of the tragedy, was completely prostrated and is still confined to her. bed.
