The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, July 1,1909. THE QUACK.

On being interviewed by an Auckland Star reporter regarding the presence of “Quacks” in Auckland, a leading medical man of that city said : This city is notorious for the number of quacks carrying on business. The stringent action recently taken by the Sydney pplice has bad the effect of driving a great many of them out of Australia, and New Zealand has to a large extent, reaped the benefit. Without exception, they'are absolute quacks and humbugs, and their presence is a danger to the community. Their impudent pretensions are not lost upon a certain section of the community, especially those suffering from hopeless and irrecoverable diseases. Cancer subjects, for instance, who ate beyond the stage where an operation might be performed, are frequently caught by these hucksters, and, after a costly course of treatment, probably die months sooner than they otherwise would. It is surprising what a number of people go to these quacks, and their daring and impudence are unbounded. Country people, especially, seem to fall easy victims to the inducive announcements made by these cure-alls. It is high time that the British Medical Association moved in the matter, and the police took further action.
