THE HEMP INDUSTRY.

FIGURES FOR LAST MONTH.

The output of hemp in this district fbr the month of June is very much in advance of what was anticipated a few months ago. The total quantity graded at Foxton by the local grader, Mr Petrie, during the month of June, was 1425 bales. This total shows an increase of 270 bales over the quantity graded during the previous mouth, and an increase of 732 bales over the corresponding month of 1908. It is very pleasing to note that the quality of the hemp graded shows a marked improvement, the number of bales of the different grades being: Good fair, 838 ; fair, 533 ; common, 53; and rejected, 1. Mr Petrie states that several of the lines submitted had been treated by patent washing machines, and that the quality of the hemp thus treated showed a decided improvement over that washed under the old method.
