BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the*Foxton Borough Council was held • in the Council Chambers last night for the purpose of considering the advisability of cancelling the order for Palmerston metal, as the quality of same was very inferior. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles Esq.), and Crs Jeuks, Coley, Riramer, Levett, Gibbs and Adams. Apologies were received from Crs Ross and Rae-Howard.
. The Mayor stated that he was responsible for calling the meeting. The metal that they were at present receiving from Palmerston was very second class. The first few trucks received had been very bad and they had complained to the Department, and had been promised that the balance would be better. This, however, had not been the case. Up to the present 200 yards had been received, and there was a further 750 yards on order. This metal was costing 6s 6d per yard on the road. He had made enquiries and had been told that Shannon metal could be put on the roads at a cost of about 10s yard. He suggested that the Palmerston order be cancelled and that tenders be invited for the supply of Shauuon metal.
Cr Rimmer said that first-class metal could be got from Ashhurst at as id per yard on the trucks there.
Cr Coley suggested cancelling the Palmerston order and letting the metalling stand over until the new year. However, if the Council were not in favour of this he would advise that enquiries as to price be made from Jackeytowu. If the price was right this metal would be found most suitable.
Other councillors present were of opinion that the Palmerston metal was not suitable and it was unanimously decided to cancel the order. In order to ascertain which metal would be the cheapest and most suitable, it was decided that tenders be invited for the supply of 100 yards of Shannon metal to be delivered on the roads where required ; prices to include all charges, and also that tenders be invited for the supply of 100 yards of Jackeytown or Ashhurst metal delivered on the trucks, prices to include royalty. Cr Levett brought up the question of purchasing a stone crusher. He said that if this were done they would be able to use the local metal. This would effect a large saving and. the crusher would eventually pay for itself. After a desultory discussion it was decided to leave the question over until the next general meeting of the Council.
