STATE COAL.

FRICTION AT DUNEDIN, Dunedin, June 24. Some friction has occurred locally in connection with a contract for the delivery of State coal. East year and this year Mr Purdie, coal merchant and carter, was the successful tenderer. At six o’clock last night Mr Purdie received notice from the president of the Coal Merchants’ Association that if he accepted the tender for the delivery of Sate coal he would lose his position as a member of the association. It appears that the Coalmine-owners’ Association recently intimated to the Merchants’ Association that the members of the latter body supplied by the former should not deal in State coal, and to this the Merchants’ Association eventually agreed. Mr Purdie stated he was determined to accept the contract.
