MR HOGG COMMENDED.
A largely-attended special meeting last evening of the Timaru Waterside Workers’ Union passed a motion to the eifect that the union admired the manly attitude of the Hon. A. W. Hogg, and condemned the Ministry for forcing the resignation of one of the workers’ best advocates iu New Zealand.
LICENSES IN THE KING COUNTRY. Palmerston N., June 23. A meeting of Rechabites in the proposed new sub-district resolved: “That this meeting expresses its indignant protest against the granting of licenses iu the King Country for the sale of alcoholic liquors, the same being a flagrant contravention ot the treaty entered into with the Maoris.” Napier, June 23. Quite a painful shock was caused here to-day by the sudden death of Mr J. F. Ludwig, a wellknown N apier jeweller. Deceased was in his usual health until a few days ago, when he was seized with an attack of pneumonia, and rapidly succumbed. The late Mr Ludwig, who was 40 years of age, was born in Wellington, being the son of one of the earliest jewellers in that city. He had a most successful business career in Napier, and was generally respected.
