The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, June 17, 1909. NO BREAKFAST.
Two of Feilding’s professional men have adopted the fast cure for bodily ills (says the Star). It is stated that they have been nearly a week without food already, and are still going well. This reminds us that Foxton possesses a resident who adopted, some months back, the no-breakfast idea, and although he has reached the halfcentury, he says that as a result he never felt “more fit” in his life. What will improve the .health of one individual may, of course, have the opposite effect on another constitution. Another local resident who was anxious to preserve his internal machinery and rid himself of that tired feeling that patent medicine vendors proclaim human flesh is heir to, also made up his mind to try the no-breakfast cure. By 10 a. in. his stomach was in rebellion, and there was a mental response, and a yearning for porridge, followed by egg and toast. He hastened home, and put his wife to some inconvenience in order to satisfy the cravings of the inner man. Do we, however, eat and drink to live or live to eat ? The custom of overloading our stomachs with unnecessary food — food and liquid that does not nourish the body, but impoverishes it and weakens the vital organs—is the curse of this young country. The patent medicine manufacturer waxes rich through our ignorance. Nature tells us when to eat and drink. Obey her. Don’t eat and drink for the sake of habit or custom.
