BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. Present:—His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles, Esq'.). Crs Jenks, Coley, Rimmer, Ross, Speirs, Adams, Gibbs, Rae-Howard and Levett. Correspondence was read as follows : i

From the Secretary of the National Defence League re Universal training, and expressing the hope that the Borough Council would invite Mr McNab to deliver a lecture on the subject in Foxton.—lt was decided that Mr R. McNab, ex-Defence Minister, be invited to address a meeting at Foxton on a suitable date on the subject of National Defence. From the Borough Band, asking for a donation of £lO towards the funds.—Decided to reply, asking them to state what they, propose to do in the way of providing regular performances to the burgesses of Foxton for the assistance asked for from the borough funds. From Palmerston N. Borough Council, re 1 supplying broken metal, and stating that the Council would be advised of cost of same as soon as their Works Committee’s report was available.

From the Treasury, advising that the amount of 15s fines, etc., recovered in the Magistrate’s Court had been remitted to the credit of the general account, also advising that the loan for street formation was how available. From Traffic Superintendent, notflying that the Council’s weekly account with the railways was not sufficient to warrant opening a ledger account, but that a deposit account could be opened. From the District Engineer, advising that eight trucks of limestone will be supplied as soon as waggons are available. From the District Health officer, advising that the sample of water forwarded was inadequate for analytical purposes, and that he had instructed Inspector O’Brien to take a sample under conditions required; by the analyst. He also stated that he intended visiting the site of the proposed intake with the bacteriologist, with a view to supplying a complete report. From Mr G. Brewer, offering to sell the Council a piece of land 66ft wide, to connect Frances and ReeVe Streets for the sum of --Decided to reply to Mr Brewer, stating that the Council will notily its decision after making further enquiries. From Mr P. W. Brown, asking the Council to have telegraph post in the middle of the footpath in the south end of Main-street, removed to the edge of the path, as it is at present dangerous. —It was resolved that the Telegraph Department be written to, asking them to remove all telegraph posts which encroach on the footpath, to the edge of the footpath. From Messrs Ferguson and Hicks, offering to sell ccpy of “Local Government in Boroughs.” —Decided to procure a copy. A petition was received from the residents in the Ladies Mile, asking that the sanitary system be extended to their properties.—lt was decided, on the motion of Cr Ross, seconded by Cr Coley, that the night soil area be extended to any part of the town where, say four householders adjoining each other make application, and that the present applicants be granted their request; the boundary to be the western side of the borough. The poundkeeper reported that during the month of May there had been impounded by the ranger 35 head of cattle and 24 horses, and that driving fees amounting to £ 1 13s had been collected. There had also been • seven horses impounded by settlers. —It was decided that the Reserves Committee meet at the Pound at three o’clock on Wednesday, to inspect the necessary alterations to fence, etc., with power to actThe Inspector of Nuisances reported the borough to be in a fair sanitary condition. Accounts amounting to 10s id were passed for payment. The striking of a general rate of 3d in the £, and a library rate of jid in the £ and a sanitation charge of 15s per pan was confirmed.
