PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE REPORT.

The following report was submitted at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council, by the Public Works Committee:

That they went out upon a visit of inspection ot the roads, etc., on Wednesday, May 12th, and on Wednesday, 9th June, held a meeting in the Council Chamber, those present being the Mayor (in the chair), Crs Gibbs, Rimmer, Ross and Speirs. As a result of the above meeting, the following recommendations were made: That the enclosed triangle at the bottom of the Main Street be removed, and that the lamp post therein be protected by three posts; that the bridge over top end of Norbitou Road be fenced with two wings (one on either side) —which has since been done ; that Hetta Street at junction with Norbiton Road have an 18-inch pipe culvert the full width of the street; that a lamp post provided with a kerosene lamp be placed at the railway crossing in Ladies’ Mile, conditionally upon Mr W* S. Stewart agreeing to look after same, the Council to provide all necessary oil, wicks and glasses; that the petition for a new road through Mr Brewer’s property be held over pending further enquiries which are being made by the Committee; that the Town Clerk be authorised to supervise the work done by the foreman and roadmen, as occasion requires, and that the foreman be asked to send in a weekly report of work done, to the Town Clerk ; that a 6fl galvanised iron fence be erected on the Harbour Street boundary of Council’s property with cart entrance, key of same to be in custody of the foreman, in order to prevent leakage of materials, and to stop all traffic through Council property; also that the 18-inch pipe culvert in Russell Street was completed, and that the metal is now coming forward and is being spread on the borough roads where specified.
