From Treasury, notifying payment of ,£SO 5s sd, paid-ons on tram.
From the Department of Roads, notifying gazetting of proclamation of land taken for Shannon road deviation.
From P. W. Brown, Foxton, stating that the drain along the boundary could' not have been made better under the circumstances, and offering to keep the drain clear at a price. From Himatangi School Committee, asking for a crossing and culvert at the school.
From J. McMinn, E. Blake, W. Jones, and G. T. Woodroofe, applying for renewal of slaughtering licenses.
The Treasurer reported : Balances, general account, ,£1869 13s yd; loan account, ,£947 9s 3d. Amounts available for expenditure for year ending March 31 : Sandon, ,£255 igs id ; Mt. Stewart, ,£299 ros 4d ; Waitobi, ,£215 7s nd; Rongotea, ,£422 3s 4d ; Carnarvon, ,£30443 lid ; Kawakawa, ,£4Ol 3s yd ; Awahou,- ,£352 6s 6d ; Whirokbio sub-division, ,£147 2s 1 id.
Mr A. K. Drew reported on the tram work for the month of May a,.-, fnllows :
The traffic has been satisfactory during the month, the receipts showing a credit balance of £6O os rod.
The principal items of traffic were: Merchandise tons, grain tons, minerals tons, sawn timber 14,500 ft, metal 3650 yards. The fares amounted to £& 16s 3d. A boiler gauge glass protector had been ordered. An offer of first-class Powell system rail sleepers at 3s had been received from the Rangitawa Timber Co., who were willing to take old rails at current rates. As sleepers would be required, he thought it advisable to accept the offer.
During the month another quotation had been received for steel rails from Messrs Duthie and Co., and 24 tons had been ordered. Mr Hickford had inspected the second-hand rails at Makerra. It was decided to instruct the ranger to impound all stock straying on the county roads, and to prosecute all persons persisting in grazing stock on the roads after being warned.
A request from Mr J. A. Smith, Moutoa, to lower the culvert which crosses the road opposite his property, was referred to the overseer, with power to act. A. H. E. Wall, Moutoa, wrote, asking the Council to plant a few willows on the Manawatu river bank immediately above his property, adjoining land belonging to the Council, as the river was washing it away.—lt was decided to have the willows planted. It was decided to invite applications for roadmen.
The special order made on May 1 2-, levying a rate of in the £ on property in the Whirokino division was confirmed, as well as the special order levying general rates in the other ridings. It was decided to hold a special meeting on Monday, 21st instant, to accept tenders. M r Hickford reported as follows for the month of May:— Awahou Riding.—Mr C. Petersen has completed his contract for supplying and delivering metal on the Foxton-Shannon and FlkinsMotuiti roads. The metal has been spread and the stones broken down, and the road is in fair order.
Kawakawa and Awahou Ridings.—Mr J. D. S. Cooksley has completed his contract of formation and metalling 531 chains of the Palmerston-Foxton road in a first-class manner. It will be necessary to supply about 125 yards of clay by tram for this road. ' •
Rongotea, Kawakawa, and Carnarvon Ridings.—Nearly all the metal available for patching the Foxtqn-Sa'udon road, between Rosina Siding and Mr Boyle’s, has been delivered, The protective works at Rongotea-Bongburn bridge are in first-class order. The river is now running under the east bank and has silted up the old course on the west side to a great extent. I recommend that willows be planted on the silt.
