LEVIN-MARTON RAILWAY.
A special meeting of the Counci of the Chamber of Commerce was held in the Secretary’s office on Thursday afternoon for the purpose of considering the following telegram received by the President of the Chamber from Mr E. Newman, M.P. : —“ Re Levin-Marton Railway. As Sir Joseph Ward will leave tor England early next week, immediate action must be taken if he is to be interviewed before departure.” There were present, Dr. Mandl (president), Messrs Bullard, Speirs, Walker, and Rae-Howard (secretary).
The Chairman said that he considered it would be advisable to leave the matter over until Sir Joseph Ward returned to the Dominion, as he would now be very busy making preparations for the trip and it is doubtful if he would be able to receive a deputation, and even if he did receive one he would not have time to go fully into the subject. Since receiving the telegram from Mr Newman he had communicated with the President of the Levin Chamber (Mr B, R. Gardener), and he also was of opinion that it would be advisable to leave the matter over until Sir Joseph’s return. Other members present were of opinion that the present was an inopportune time to interview the Premier and it was decided that the matter be postponed until Sir Joseph Ward returns to the Dominion and that a letter be forwarded to Mr E. Newman advising him of the Council’s decision.
