We often hear remarks such as “ ’tis a hard world ” also that dwellers on this terrestrial globe grow more selfish as the years go by ; likewise “every man for himself and the devil take the hindmost/’ These sayings, however, do not apply to Foxton and district, as has been proved time and again during the past two years. Only recently an unfortunate fellow settler was confined to his bed, a victim to a dread disease. He was reduced to severe financial straits. When his condition became known several large-hearted people saw to his immediate needs prior to his death. Among these were Messrs T. Bowe and H. Coley, who collected a sum of After paying necessary expenses they hold a balance of ,£l6, which they intend to spend on the maintenance of deceased’s children at the rate of los per week until the fund is exhausted. It is a pleasure to be able to chronicle such acts of charity, and we are reminded of the saying of the Great Teacher : ‘ ‘lnasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these, My brethren, ye have done it unto Me.”
