CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A meeting of the Council of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held in the Secretary’s office on Thursday evening. Present: Dr. Mandl (Chairman), Messrs (Rev.) Aitken, Bullard, L.evett, Phillips, Speirs, Ri.mmer, M. H. Walker, and the Secretary (Mr P. H. Rae-Howard).

Correspondence was received from Mr Ed. Newman, M.P., accepting the honour of having been made an honorary member of the Council, and expressing his willingness to at all times further the interests of Foxton and district.

A letter was also received from Mr John Stevens, acknowledging the Chamber’s kind appreciation ot his efforts in the past, and thanking the Chamber for having elected him a life member. A letter was also read from the Wellington Chamber, in respect to the Eevin-Marton link ot the Main Trunk Eine, and suggesting that an appeal made to the Government at the present time to have this line constructed, owing to the financial stringency, may court refusal. The letter was sympathetic of the movement.

A letter was also read from the Auckland Chamber, on the same subject, asking for fuller information.

The Chairman stated that during a conversation with the Mayor of Devin, he had been informed that the Prime Minister was to perform the opening ceremony of the Weraroa Post Office, and it bad been suggested that it would be opportune for a deputation to wait upon the Minister in connection with the proposed line. It was resolved that the Chairman definitely arrange with the Mayor of Devin in respect to same. It was pointed out that the deputation would consist of representatives from Marton, Foxton and Devin Chambers. A discussion took place in respect to the establishment of a bond store at Foxton, and it was decided to draw up and circulate a petition among the wholesale merchants, and that the Palmerston North Chamber be asked to cooperate with the local Chamber in respect to same.
