DIVING FOR WEALTH.
There was a new development recently in the Holyhead lost jewellery mystery. As may be remembered, it was announced that a lady, while going aboard a steamer, had dropped a bag containing worth of jewels and money into the sea. Divers have since been busily engaged in trying to recover the valuables. But the jewels are now not believed to be in the water at all. It appears that the lady, Mrs Pugh Kvans. arrived at Holyhead with four parcels. Three of these she entrusted to a poiter, and the other she retained in her own possession. The parcels were never lost sight of with the exception of for a few minutes ou the arrival of the Irish mail train. On the porter returning to the van, one package, containing money, jewellery, and valuable necklaces and handkerchiefs, was found to be missing. A search was instituted, but this proved unavailing, and the lady proceeded to her destination. Next morning a leather bag was seen floating on the water. It was secured by some of the steamship officials. Then it was found that the lock had been cut, the leather torn, and the contents removed. It is supposed that the lady was followed by an accomplished thief, who, watching his opportunity, extracted the contents of the bag, and subsequently left by steamer or 'rail. The loss, as already slated is estimated at Mrs Evans, whose husband holds an official position abroad, is now on a visit to England. She had been staying at hotels with friends, and was en route for Dublin when the robbery took place. Following the discovery of the rifled leather case the railway company issued instructions for diving operations to be discontinued, and the detectives are now endeavouring to track the thief. •
