MUNICIPAL GAS WORKS.
In conversation with the Mayor of Palmerston yesterday, our representative was informed that the ratepayers made a huge blunder in handing over the right to a private company to light the town with gas. In his opinion the Council should take the first opportunity of acquiring the works as a municipal concern. When the question of a loan for this purpose was be L fore the ratepayers, we strongly advocated the municipalisation of lighting, but the ratepayers were prepared to allow some private enterprise to make the experiment, and refused to sanction the loan. The Council, however, safeguarded the ratepayers to the extent of inserting a clause in the concession, which gives them the right to purchase the gas works at stated periods. We hope the Council will seriously consider this question before the expiry of the five years’ concession.
