CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The members of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce are to be congratulated upon having secured the services of Dr. Mandl as President for the ensuing term. The good work accomplished by this body in the past should not lose any of its lustre during his term of office. The Chamber’s sphere of usefulness depends largely upon the initiative and general knowledge of its President. The newlyelected President’s past connection with the Council of the Chamber is evidence of the fact that while the “ village pump ” will receive due consideration, matters of greater moment to the whole district will receive his careful attention. “Harbour Board ”is writ large on the Chamber’s scroll. The constitution of the local Harbour Board will for ever redound to the credit of the Chamber. Another question of greater importance than the constitution of the Harbour Board, and which concerns the whole Dominion, is that of straightening the Maiu Trunk Dine between Devin and Martou. The ground has already been broken, but it is imperative for this Chamber, assisted by the other towns interested, to continue the agitation until Parliament is educated, and the work sanctioned. Almost insurmountable difficulties beset those interested. Misrepresentation must be refuted, and parochial jealousy set aside. All the issues require careful handling by a competent and diplomatic President, and we have no hesitation in saying that Dr. Mandl is equal to the task. This work alone will keep the Chamber fully occupied for some time to come. Included among the members of the Council is some “ new blood,” in the persons of Messrs Rev. Aitken, Alex. Speirs, and J. T. Eevett, men of ability and determination. We wish the new Council a useful year of office.
