The Australian eleven open their tour in England to-day, when Notts will be their opponents. The first Australian team which visited England in the year 1878, opened their tour against the same county, and were beaten by an innings. Cricketers in this district will regret to learn that Mr “Jack ” Nightingale, who last season showed such good form cricket field is leaving onr He has been offered and has accepted a lucrative billet as bookkeeper and assistant manager with his old employer Mr Sam Charlton, who has taken over theCarlton Club Hotel, Hastings, and will take up his duties there within th e next few weeks.
The hearing of the appeal brought by Captain Naylor against the suspension of his certificate for twelve months consequent on the wreck of the Penguin, was concluded before Mr Justice Cooper, and the assessors, Captains Gray and Lake, yesterday. The Court intimated that it would give its decision at ro o’clock on Friday morning.
