FAULTS OF “THE TRADE.”
The practices adopted by some publicans in breaking the laws of the country must be repugnant to a large numbs.r of men engaged in a legitimate business. Complaints against evils of the trade are at present very prevalent and more especially in regard to the dispensing of adulterated liquor or the retailing of cheap spirits out of bottles of well-known and popular articles, such as Wolfe’s Schnapps, Information has recently been received by the Proprietors of this spirit that will lead some of the offenders in this latter respect into very serious trouble as the Proprietors of Wolfe’s Schnapps have determined not only to protect themselves and the reputation of their article, but also the general public against such frauds. In an advertisement published in this issue in another column a reward of is offered for such information which will lead to the conviction of any person carrying on these reprehensible practices, and it is announced that any information may be supplied to the Solicitors of the Udolpho Wolfe Company, Messrs. Chapman and Tripp of Wellington. Offenders may be ignorant of the very grave risk they are incurring, and for their information it is set out that “ on conviction on indictment they become liable to imprisonment up to two years, or to fine, or to both fine and imprisonment.” The liquor traffic presents many difficult social problems, but the least that can be done is to see that what liquor is sold shall be an honest article and true to label.
