THE MAYORALTY.

Nominations of candidates for the Mayorality and Borough Council closed at noon to-day. For the former position, Cr G. H. Stiles, being the only candidate, had a walk over, and we congratulate him on attaining to the high position he will be called upon to, occupy. It would have been more satisfactory to Cr Stiles had the electors endorsed his election. On the other hand, it may be taken as a compliment. It a majority of the ratepayers were of opinion that he did not possess the necessary administrative qualifications, then they most assuredly would have brought forward another citizen. As a Councillor, the Mayor - elect has carried out his duties conscientiously, and has strongly advocated street and footpath improvements. He has now committed himself to a progressive policy, including water and drainage, formation of footpaths, and assistance to the Manawatu County Council in forming a road to the local seaside. It will be noticed that, having regard to many routine matters, his time will be fully occupied. It must not be forgotten, however, that the Mayorelect is only one out of a council of ten, and much as he may desire to carry out a progressive policy, he cam only hope to do so with the co-operation of his colleagues. We feel sure that whatever schemes are tabled for the advancement of the borough, *will receive the careful consideration of the Mayorelect. We wish him a successful year of office.
