THE FEDERAL CAPITAL.

The Federal Government has wasted no time over the new Federal capital site, and the surveyors have been hard at work* Though no definite proposals have yet been made, the area that will probably l»e disked "for from "the State of New South Wales will be about iooo square miles. The area is 200 miles from Sydney, and is shaped rather like a horse shoe, with the two points to the south. Queanbeyau is about in the centre. It does not include either Yass or Take George, the latter of which lies to the north. The irregular shape is due to the fact that the survey has been made to take in a reasonable cachment area along the Cotter, Queanbeyau, and Malonglo Rivers. The fixing of the exact position is a matter for Parliament, but three sites will be recommended for its consideration by a board appointed by the Minister for Home Affairs (Mr Mahon). These sites are within a radius of three miles of the camp pitched for|the accommodation of the Federal members inspecting the district. This camp is about seven miles west of Queanbeyau. Contour surveys are now being made to povide accurate information for Parliament. The territory is to be connected with the sea by a strip of land running down to Jervis Bay. The Commonwealth Government will ask for the transfer to it of a considerable portion of the foreshores of the bay. The precise location and extent of this strip has yet to be considered. Captain Creswell has been sent to Jervis, Bay to report on this matter to the Federal Government.
