MUNICIPAL ELECTION.

We remind all interested in the nomination of candidates for the Mayoralty and the Council that nominations close at noon on Thursday next with the Town Clerk. In the case of nomination for the Mayoralty, each nomination must be accompanied by a deposit of ;£io and in that of a Councillor with a deposit of ,£3. In this connection and to save any friction we might mention that the Returning Officer cannot accept cheques as deposits. The Mayor holds office for one year and Councillors for two. Any person possessing freehold, rating or residential qualifications and whose name appears on the District Electors’ Eist is qualified to be nominated. For the position of Mayor so far as we can gather, only one candidate, is out in the person of senior councillor Stiles, and it would therefore appear that he will have a “walk oyer,” That he is fully qualified to hold such an honourable position, few will deny; his long connection with the affairs of the borough and his large interests therein is evidence that he will not play fast and loose with the finances. His programme, as set forth in another column demonstrates that he is not in favour of a stick-in-the-mud policy. He advocates a water and drainage scheme, footpaths and assistance towards the cost of construction of a road to the seaside. We believe he will merit the hearty co-opera-tion and respect of whatever body of Councillors is elected.

Of the old Councillors, so far two only have decided to again offer their services viz., Crs G. Coley and Jenks and we should like to see both, these gentlemen re-elected, because they have taken a keen interest in our municipal life for many years past and much as we desire to see au infusion of new blood it would be unwise to pass over two such prominent and faithful public servants. Cr White has not decided whether he will again stand. The following are the names of new candidates who will no doubt be nominated :

Messrs Dr. Adams, Wm. Ross, Thos. Rimmer, P. H. Rae-Howard, J. T. Levett, A. J. Gibbs, E. Ball, P. T. Robinson, W. S. Stewart, and one or two “dark horses.” An election will, we hope, stir up a little enthusiasm in borough affairs and burgesses will be. an* xious to know what the views of candidates are before recording their votes for or against them.
