The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, April, 17, 1909. WHOLESOME ADVICE.
In the course of his speech at the laying of the foundation stone of the Wanganui College the Governor said : “It is always a pleasure to me to show by any means in my power my admiration for the educational system of New Zealand and my profound respect for its masters and its professors. No educational department, no system of routine instruction, can produce what has been created in this school, that subtle atmosphere which distinguishes our public schools at Home. Pride in his school and its traditions and jealousy of its honour, respect for religion, for authority, for womenkiud, scorn for low thoughts and mean actions, and contempt for the impure minded, the slacker, the coward, the tufthunter, or the purse-proud. Add to that loyalty to hip house and a, perfect worship
for those who have won their way into the school cricket and football team, and you obtain the class of boy the Knglish public schools turn out in thousands, not perfect if you like, and wanting, I fear, too often in scholarship, but after all as Kmerson ventured to write “The world's great men have not common!}' been great scholars, nor its great scholars great men,” hut boys who have been taught not to funk, not to squeal, and have learnt, to ‘play the game.’ ”
