ALCOHOL AND EXTREME COLO. It requires no unusual degree of prescience to enable one to say that temperance reformers throughout the world will take special notice of. the statement made by Professor David at a mass meeting held in honour of his return, at Sydney, on April a, 1909. Among other very suggestive things concerning his tour in the Antarctic regions he laid stress on the tact that “during the four months’ journey of the parly not one diop of alcohol was used. On one occasion—a birthday celebration—they had just a little wine, but found their resistance to cold dropped, so they dropped alcohol. This is a severe condemnation of the use and value of alcohol from the scientific standpoint, and confirms the attitude taken up by two of the most eminent medical men of the lime, viz., Sir Victor Horsley and Sir Frederick Treves. The latter says : “ I was, as you know, with the rebel column that moved on to Ladysmith, and, of course, it was an extremely trying time by reason of the hot weather. In that enormous column of 30,000, the first who dropped out Were not the tall men, or the short men, or the big men, or the little men they were the drinkers, and they dropped out as clearly as if they had been labelled with a big letter on their backs.” Dr Nansou, in his “ First Crossing of Greenland,” says:—“My experience leads me to take a decided stand against the use of stimulants, and I shall maintain that the best course is to banish alcoholic drinks from the list of necessaries for an Arctic expedition. 1 ” The foregoing testimony is quite sufficient to explode the popular fallacy expressed thus: “I must take a little drink to keep the cold out.” When Edison, the great scientific genius of America, was asked if he thought alcohol would not help him to endure the severe mental strain of close application to study, he tersely replied ; “ I have a better use for my brain.” The best science of the day is now on the side of total abstinence. If alcohol is of no value in the frozen zone, where men are exposed to direct hardships, then where does its value come in ? By pretty general consent its use is condemned in the torrid zone, and now it is ruled out of the frozen zone, and religion, science, philosophy, and politics declare the temperate zone has no time for it.

Indigestion is like a burglar in the body. It rolls you of that which you need for your own support and comfort. What is more, the burglar is often practically an invited guest. We often allow Indigestion to enter our systems through sheer carelessness. We cat too "much or we eat too lit tle. We eat food that we like but which docs not like us. We cat too quickly, generally, because we have to do so in these active, busy times. We commit many errors of diet, and Mr Indiges-. tion takes us off our guard, one day Then we know what real misery is. The food we eat does us little or no good. Sometimes we cannot even eat the food necessary to sustain and invigorate us. We grow depressed, irritable, nervous, melancholic, lethargic world-weary. What is to be done r 1 Don’t try to cure Indigestion by starving yourself, as some may advise von to do. Don’t become a food faddist, and limit yourself to any one special kind of food Don’t try the no-breakfast or any other meal-saving remedy. Keep your stomach tissues strong by eating good, nourishing food and by taking Mother Seigel’s Syrup to help you to digest it. Indigestion—with all its accompanying disorders — constipation, biliousness, flatulence, heartburn, nausea, dizziness, liver complaint —arises from a weakened stomach. The stomach, being weak, is unable to perform its duties well, becomes charged with poisonous acids, fluids, and gases, and ferments. These force themselves into recognition, at the weakest point, by symptoms of pain or discomfort. Mother Scigel’s Syrup cures all digestive disorders, by removing the cause and strengthening the stomach itself. A few doses of Syrup will tone up the weak stomach, cleanse the liver and kidneys, and make you cheery and well once more. The blood is purified the muscles grow firm and strong, the nerves as true as stee I, and the mind clear, alert, cheerful. Mother Scigel’s Syrup cleanses the whole system, and makes the Isiman body secure against all nervous and . functional disorders. By using it occasionally, you can eat a good meal without: nervous anxiety about the morrow. You can enjoy life to the full, with the appetite and digestion of a healthy young plough-boy. That is the feeling which makes life worth living.

HEALTHY AS A BUSH RIDER X $ m m Keep your liver active! This is the secret o£ the general good health of bushriders and stockmen. They rarely suffer from Indigestion or hiver Complaint, because horseback riding is one of the best preventives of those disorders. But yon cannot take horseback exercise when you have neither the horse nor the time. There is one other thing you can do, and that is—use Mother Scigel s Syrup, the oldest and best stomach and liver tonic known. Indigestion and stagnant liver generally work together. The man or woman with a sluggish liver is nervous, irritable, depressed, gloomy, and cannot enjoy any meals, not even the best. Mother Seigel s Syrup aids digestion, stimulates the liver, banishes Indigestion, Biliousness, Headaches, Constipation, and all disorders of Stomach, Tivcr and Bowels. “After nearly three years I can confirm all I said on November ist, 1905, as to the good qualities of your splendid medicine, Mother Seigcl's Syrup. It thoroughly restored me to health and the good I derived from it has proved permanent. (X,ettcr from Mrs. F. Goble, Alpha Road. Nailswnrtli, Adelaide, A A., October Bth, 1908.) _ ’ On November ist, 1905, she wrote this : “ For long years I was a victim to indigestion and Liver Complaint. 1 always felt languid, out of sorts and unwell, so that I had to take to my bed for days together, « . . Six years ago a storekeeper advised me to try your famous remedy, and I was thoroughly cured by taking only four bottles of Mother SEIGEL’S SYRUP.

“ Two years and three months ago I wrote to tell yon how greatly I had been been bcuctited in health by using Mother Seigel’s Syrup. It relieved me of severe Indigestion and Biliousness and I am happy to say there has been no return of those distressing complaints, and I am at present quite well.' ‘ I continue to take a little of the Syrup from time to time and find it very beneficial ; besides being free from the drawbacks and unpleasantness connected with most physics. Mother Seigel’s Syrup is a remedy that can be relied on to give satisfaction.” Letter, dated October 10th, 1008, from Mr J. Bate, 70, Grenfell Street, Adelaide, South Australia
