A DISGRACEFUL AFFAIR.

A MATTER FOR ENQUIRY. States the Opunake Times : Great indignation exists in this district in connection with the death of Mrs Brosuau, which took place at Hawera on Tuesday last. From reports to hand the case is one of the most inhuman we have heard of. It appears that on Monday last (the day on which a storm was raging) Dr. Barron was called to the Arawhata road, Oaouui, to attend to Mrs Brosuau. He considered her condition so critical that he ordered her removal to the Hawera Hospital, also forwarding a letter to the hospital doctor, describing the nature of the complaint. The ambulance was sent for and late in the day the unfortunate patient was on the road to Hawera. At Manaia, Dr. Noonan was consulted, and he recommended getting to the hospital with all haste. About i a.ra. on Tuesday morning Mrs Brosuau was admitted into that institution where the sick are supposed to be cared for and kindness extended. After being in the hospital less than an hour instructions were given for her removal, as such cases were not taken there. To think that a woman should be driven about 40 miles through a storm, admitted into the hospital, and then practically turned out in the middle of the night, is what a callous man would not do to a dumb animal. Out in the cold and bitter night a shelter had to be sought for the sick woman, and she was admitted into a private hospital, where she gave birth to a dead child. Even at this place the woman was not allowed to remain, as there were not the necessary appliances there for the full treatment of the case. Once again the dying woman was raised from her bed and taken into a bitterly cold world to find a rest. Another home was found, and it was there that she passed away at 7 o’clock on Tuesday evening, 18 hours after she was admitted to the public hospital, and rejected. Is it any wonder that she died? What farmer would have treated a dairy cow so cruelly ? The Hawera Public Hospital is the place the deceased was sent on recommendation ,of a duly qualified medical man, and why the authorities at that institution committed such a barbarous act by ordering her removal is for them to explain.
