PERSONAL.
Mr P. J. and Miss Hennessy left Foxton to-day for Wellington eu route for a trip round the world. We join with all Mr Hennessy’s friends in wishing him and Miss Hennessy bon voyage, a happy time and safe return. Mr and Mrs H. F. Smith, of Carterton, Wairarapa, celebrated their golden wedding at their sou’s residence at Palmerston North, 011 Saturday last, there being a large family gathering. Mr Smith arrived in Wellington in 1840 in the ship Oriental. Mrs Smith, who is a daughter ol the late Mr and Mrs John Sellers, Lower Hutt, arrived in 1841, in the ship Arab. They were married in the Lower Hutt.in 1859 by the Rev. Jas. Tunes, and lived in Wellington until 1880, when they went to Carterton, where they have resided for the past 29 years. The family consists of Mr J. A. Smith (Palmerston North), Mr W. H. Smith and Mr A. G. LSmith (of Wellington), Mr Walter L. Smith (Petoue), and Mr A. H. Smith of Mr J. C. Williamson’s Company.
Professor David, who went North by.the Maori on Thursday night,en route for Sydney, had to go. aboard ■ the ferry boat as he was—looking more like a melodramatic smuggler than the cultured scientist he is—owing to his belongings being in an inaccessible position in the Nimrod’s hold, He was stopped by the officer at the gangway and ordered to quit the vicinity with the best haste he could muster. He protested mildly that he was Professor David, but his burly, rough-clad personality did'not appear to justify the claim, and the • bewildered Professor was scorned and rejected again. Finally, Mr J. K. Davis, chief officer of the Nimrod, came to the rescue. He established the identity of the supposed .smuggler with that of the eminent scientist. Professor David was welcomed on board with open arms, and proceeded on his voyage, .
