PERSONAL.

A farewell banquet is to be tendered to Mr P. J. Heunessy in Perreau’s rooms, this evening, by local citizens. As our readers are aware, Mr and Miss Heunessy leave Foxton next mouth for a trip round the world. The late Thomas Morrell Macdonald, of Invercargill, barrister and solicitor, who expired suddenly whilst entering a cab on the morning of the 15th inst., was well-known and highly respected by Southlanders now residing in Foxton, amongst whom may be mentioned Messrs Ross, Rough, Phillips, and (the writer (Mr L. E. Reade). The last - named was first acquainted with Mr Macdonald in 1875, and from thence till he left Invercargill in 1890, he was on most friendly terms, and on more than one occasion he greatly benefited by Mr Macdonald’s friendly advice, both legally and privately. By the death of Mr Macdonald, one of the ablest and most upright members of the legal profession has joined the majority. At the last annual dinner of the Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland, held in London, the chair was occupied by Professor Percy Faraday Frankland, L.L.D., F.R.S-, of Birmingham University, a brother of Mr F. W. Frankland, of Foxton. There was a very distinguished company present, including the Right Hon. Earl Halsbury (late Lord High Chancellor) and the Right Hon. Lord Robert Cecil. The professor was heartily congratulated upon the fact that he had been elected to the presidential chair, which, thirty years ago, was occupied by his father, Sir Edward Frankland, who was the first president of the institute. Among the vocalists who enlivened the proceedings, were Miss Irene Ainslie vpf Auckland) and Mr Boulderson.
