BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers last night. Present: Mayor Gower, and Crs G. Coley, A. E. Shadbolt, White, Jenks, P. Hennessy, Frankland and Stiles. Cr Baker was present, but did not take his seat at the Council table. After the minutes had been disposed of, correspondence was read and dealt with as follows:

From Palmerston North Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, asking for capital value of borough.— Received.

From Education Department, re subsidy for library of /’ls 2s 6d.— Received.

From W. H. Signal, Marton, re motor car license, and stating that he has al ready paid a license fee to the Raugitikei County Council.— The Clerk stated that since the letter had been received the fee had been paid. From Secretary Flaxmill Employees’ Union, agreeing to rent the old Council Chambers at 6s per week. From the Treasury re irregularities of voting papers for loan of ,£3OO, and stating that same could be validated by Order-in-Council. —This had been attended to by the Clerk.—Cr Jenks was of opinion that the Government had not the funds, and the irregularity was only an excuse to gain time.—The Clerk stated that a portion of the money which should have been expended from loan had been paid out of the general fund. Provided the loan money did not come to hand before the 31st March, he thought the auditor would allow the item taken from the general fund in view of the loan having been sanctioned by the Government.

From Manawatu County Council, enclosing account for repairs to Whirokino bridge, ,£348 13s 8d. —Received.

From Mr A. H. Hindmarsh, solicitor, asking payment of ns in settlement of deposit (£SO) and costs claimed by Stewart. — The Clerk slated that a cheque had been forwarded.

From the Westport Borough Council, stating that it was in a position to supply tar. —Received.

The poundkeeper reported that 36 head of cattle had been impounded during the month of February ; driving fees, 15s. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that the borough was in a sanitary condition.

The roadman reported that the footpaths in Main Street and in the Avenue to the Manawatu Hotel required top-dressing with limestone, and also setting forth the quantity of metal required.— Report adopted. Accounts amounting to 18s lid were passed for payment.
