THE DRINK BILL.

Thk annual statement, compiled by the Rev. Mr Walker, relating to the amount of liquor consumed in the colony is always an interesting statement. Until the last year or two there had been a steady decline in the amount consumed per head, a decline extending over a number of years. Then there came a reaction, and for several years, in spite of the work of the temperance organisations, this amount rose year by year. The increase was not very large, but it recurred with a remarkable persistency. Last year there was, however, another swing of the pendulum, and Mr Walker records a decrease to the extent of qj'ad per head. The actual expenditure throughout ilie colony exceeded that of the previous year by £84,500, but the amount consumed by each individual was a trifle less.
