Vermder, secretary of the Penge Building Society, was sentenced to six years’. imprisonment for defalcations amounting to ,£20,000. The sum of ,£2500 in notes and gold was stolen from the treasury of the Cruiser Indomitable, while the vessel was anchored at Sheerness.
The Kducation Committee of the London County Council proposes to spend nearly a million pounds during the next 18 months on elementary and secondary schools. The Crystal Palace has proved a financial failure. The Lord Mayor and the Mayors of other London boroughs are considering a scheme for securing the Palace, and organising a national park and museum. Quito, February 25. A shocking railway accident is reported from Riohamba, in Ecuador, where a train was derailed and hurled a hundred feet over a cliff.
