Nelson, Yesterday. Mr T. A. Price’s sawmill at Belgirove was destroyed by fire. Only an engine was saved. The loss is heavy. There are at present no details regarding insurance. Hop-picking is now commencing, and in a few days will be general. The crops on the whole are up to the average, and of good quality. The hops are wellgrown and in good condition. Wellington, Yesterday. A youth named Terena Murphy pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to-day to three charges of breaking and entering the premises of the Hutt Valley Hardware Company, and was committed to the {Supreme Court for sentence. An inquest was held to-day on the body of William Henry Massey, who was killed at Pencarrow quarry by a fall of earth, caused by an explosion of gunpowder. Evidence was given that deceased was a recent arrival from England, and an electrician by trade. Contrary to instructions he was testing the wire in a drive when the charge, which had previously failed, exploded and deceased was buried beneath 3000 tons of earth. The inquest was adjourned till later in the day.
