THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
[TO THE EDITOR.J Sir,— Perhaps the enclosed table of royalties may prove of interest to your readers at this time. This is a royalty scale proposed to be charged by an estate in the Manawatu: — ggtf £g a .. g||°. II « S* £ g.| ■ £ s d £ s d £ s d 20 20 16 o 21 26 100 40 22 30 140 40 23 4 O I 12 O 80 24 46 i 16 o 40 25 70 216 O TOO 26 86 3 So 120 27 no 480 100 28 13 o 540 16 o 29 14 6 5 16 o 12 o 30 16 6 6 12 o 16 0 31 18 6 780 16 o 32 23 o 940 116 0 33 26 o 10 8 o 140 34 28 o 11 4 0 16 o 35 30 o 12 o o 16 o Any further rise of fibre on London market, royalty to rise in proportion. You will observe from the foregoing figures that while fibre rose on the Loudon market the compiler wanted 4s increased royalty out ot that On top of-this he wanted ,£IOO per year rent for the mill which would add about 7s per ton to the scutched fibre. In addition he wanted is per cord royalty on all firewood cut on the estate for the use ot the mill. He also required the millers to keep the fences in a good state of repair and to clean the drains ; to plant all flax roots grubbed iu laying the trams while he claimed the right of pasturing stock all over it. You will also observe that in several of these items where fibre rose £1 on the London market, he wanted the whole of the rise, in two cases he wanted more and this in face of the fact that the millers being bound by a contract with the merchants might not be getting the benefit of rise.—■ I am, etc., Flaxie. P.S.—I have assumed that 8 tons of green leaf will make a ton of fibre in many cases it requires more.
