Additions are made to the Hiraatangi stock sale list. A meeting of the Council of the local Chamber of Commerce will be held at 7.30 o’clock this evening. At All Saints’Church harvest thanksgiving service on Sunday evening, the lessons were read by Mr W. Barnard. The sermon was preached by the vicar. Great bargains in drapery, millinery, and sunshades are announced for this week at the Bon March 3, Palmerston, It will pay buyers to see these parting prices. *

The Chairman of the local School Committee has been notified that Mr G. H. Davey has been appointed pupil teacher, vice Miss N. Roche, resigned. Mr Davey will commence duty on Ist March. The interior of All Saints’ Church presented a very attractive appearance last Sunday, with its tasteful decorations and abundant supply ot fruit and vegetables, in honour of the annual Havest Festival. Special hymns, suitable to the occasion, were sung, and appropriate sermons preached by the vicar. Excellent congregations attended both morning and evening services.

“ Parent ” writes calling attention to a band of small boys whom, he states, promenade the main and back streets almost every evening, smoking cigarettes and indulging in acts of larrikinism, which shows a decided lack of parental control. “ Parent ” suggests that the police should give these boys a timely warning and send them off to their homes.

The Patea School Committee are to be congratulated upon having secured such a capable headmaster for their State School as Mr Barrowclough undoubtedly is. Mr Barrowclough has been only a little over a year in the Wanganui Board’s service, but during that short period his reputation as as a teacher, and his high qualifications, have not been lost sight of by the Board. Patea will be fortunate if they retain his services for any length of time.

The recent fires in the Awaiti Block have been most destructive says a northern exchange, and a large quantity of good flax belonging to Messrs Coley, King and Co. has been destroyed. It had been the intention of Messrs Coley, King and Co. to keep their mill working until the water rose so high in the winter that the flax could not be cut, but unfortunately the recent destruction of most of the flax by fire will necessitate the mill being closed down in about a mouth’s time. The flax that was coming on nicely for next year, when it was proposed to cut it, has also been destroyed by fire, so that the firm will not be able to carry on operations as vigorously as it had intended.

The Hon. A. W- Hogg, (Minister for Labour) will receive a deputation of Manawatu flaxmill workers next Friday afternoon. The Great Operascope picture entertainment will open in the local Public Hall on Thursday evening next.

Mr A. D. Clemett, local postmaster, left for Auckland this morning on his annual holiday. Mr Boland who is not unknown in Foxton is the relieving officer.

The chairman of the School Committee de-ires to acknowledge with thanks a donation of xos from Mrs T. Haywood, (who is on a short visit to Foxton), in aid of the school picnic and prize fund.

Mr John I. Fox, latelof Foxton, Manawatu, and now of Queen’s College, Oxford, will be the Labour candidate for Reading at the next general election. He has been selected as a prospective candidate by the Reading Labour Representation Committee.

A quiet wedding was celebrated by the Rev. G. K. Ailken at the residence of Mr R. IS. Gray, Johnston Street, this morning, when Mr H. G. Vaughan, of Havelock, Hawke’s Bay, was united to Miss Alice Harding, niece of Mr and Mrs Gray. Mr and Mrs Vaughan left by this afternoon’s train for their home at Havelock carrying away with them the best wishes of a large circle of friends.
