SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting of the above was held last night. Present : Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Rev. Ailken (secretary), Bullard, Perreau, and Read. The Headmaster’s report was read and received. Certain requirements asked for were left in hands of the visitors to procure. In respect to information asked for by Mr Fossey re probable number of pupils for dressmaking and woodcarviug classes at the technical school. —It was resolved that Mr Adams, as local supervisor, forward the information required. The question of the establishment of a High School was again discussed, and it was decided to arrange a conference with the chairman of the Education Board on the subject. During a lengthy discussion regret was expressed that no local scholar had been successful in winning a scholarship, and that one pupil who had secured a proficiency certificate at the recent examination was debarred from pursuing his studies at a secondary school, free of cost, by reason of his being over age. It was pointed out that the parent of the pupil was in communication with the chairman of the Board, who had promised to review the case.
The Chairman couseuted to interview the cleaner in reference to the schedule of his duties.
It was reported that 10s 6d bad been collected towards the piize and picnic fund. The Chairman stated that at least would be required to provide funds for the prizes,, river excursion and picnic. He stated that Mr Signall had consented to meet the Committee in a generous spirit in reference to conveying the children to the beach.
It was decided that the picnic be held on Friday, March sth, and that the prize distribution take place on the afternoon previous at the school. It was further resolved to ask Mr Newman, M.P., to award the prizes. The Chairman, Secretary, and Headmaster were appointed a committee to purchase prizes. It was decided to make a special appeal to parents and townspeople for funds towards the object above named.
It was decided to allow any parents to accompany the children who so desired, on payment of the steamer fare, is. Other matters of a formal nature were discussed, and the meeting rose.
